Pratte and Shaw Announce Intention to Seek Top Student Government Vacancy
By Lauren Chooljian
Although the election is several months and snowstorms away, the first candidates for Student Government Association president and vice president have announced their intentions to run. Ashley Pratte and Matthew Shaw, both of the class of 2011, will be running for student body President and Vice President, respectively. The pair announced their candidacy to their council on December 4th, at the Holiday Dance sponsored by the Class of 2011.
Pratte and Shaw, who are president and vice president (respectively) of their class, say they have considered running for the top S.G.A positions since last year. They cite the difficult decision of leaving their class council as one of the reasons for the lengthy process.
The candidates stressed that the early announcement was not to be construed as violating S.G.A. campaign rules, which prohibit campaigning outside of a specified one-week window.
"We were always concerned about our class council, and the vacancies we would be leaving behind," Pratte said. "However, we feel as though it's time for a new challenge, and are confident in our decision, knowing that we would be leaving our council in good hands."
Both candidates have been involved in Student Government since their sophomore year. When reflecting on his experience with S.G.A., Shaw says, "Since I've been here, I've always wanted to get involved and have enjoyed doing so as a representative of my class and hopefully one for my school."
Elections for S.G.A. President and Vice President will take place in February of 2010. Pratte, Shaw and presumably other candidates will be giving their election speeches on Tuesday, Feb. 2, and the debate between all candidates will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Voting will take place in Davison Hall and the Coffee Shop on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and Wednesday, Feb. 10.
