For the first time in several years, Saint Anselm has its official Christmas tree back. Amid a national recession with effects on campus that include outsourcing discussions, revenue generating plans and salary increase delays, at least a community Christmas tree is shining.

Illuminated for the first time on Sunday, Dec. 6, appropriately the feast of Saint Nicholas, the tree stands in the plaza between Alumni Hall and the college coffee shop. The Christmas tree, along with a tree next to the crèche scene, has hundreds of new white LED bulbs. Physical Plant staff undertook the trimming at the request of the office of the VP for Student Affairs.

The new light project, according to Joseph Horton, VP for Students Affairs, has sparked an effort among campus organizations to raise funds. Already, The Saint Anselm Crier has agreed to contribute $500 toward the $1,500 goal. Other campus groups that wish to help in the fund drive should contact Dr. Horton's office.

The lighting ceremony, organized by the Saint Anselm College council of the Knights of Columbus, included a blessing, Christmas carols and refreshments.
