Students Intern with Manchester Rock 'n' Roll Band
Dello Russo '10, Sussek '09, Susi '09 Work for 'Best Not Broken'
By Gregory W. Wallace
When cover band Best Not Broken formed in early 2007, the musical essentials for the New Hampshire area group fell in to place: bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, and vocals. What he was missing was a loyal following of college students, frequent visitors to the pubs and bars that Eric Jackson's group headlines.
Jackson found his collegiate ambassadors in three Saint Anselm interns, who he says bring "a neat energy" to promoting the band. In addition to promoting the band on campus and through Facebook, the interns assist with logistical details, letting Jackson and company focus on their music.
"Our goal is to be an original band and to be out touring and promoting our music," he said, describing the sound as a mix of "The Killers, Guster, and Kings of Leon." When describing Best Not Broken to older generations, Jackson says he cites The Police, U2, and R.E.M. Their repertoire of cover music includes Blink 182, Green Day, Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Matchbox 20, Neil Diamond, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Rolling Stones.
Staci Dello Russo '10, who works with seniors Hannah Sussek and Jim Sussi, says she has worked with the band since January after hearing about the opportunity through the college.
"We make suggestions for how the band can gain a larger audience," Dello Russo said. "Eric has a fulltime job, too, so we do different things to alleviate his stress."
Best Not Broken regularly performs at Murphy's Taproom in Manchester, Peddler's Daughter of Nashua, the Londonderry Pavilion, and Milford's Shenanigans. The band has performed several benefit shows for cancer-related charities.
Jackson is a commercial real estate agent by day who plays guitar and leads vocals. Scott Atridge, originally from Florida, plays bass. Dan Cyr plays percussion and Brian Cross mans the keyboard.
On Friday evening, Best Not Broken returned to Murphy's on Elm Street, for a show in honor of Saint Anselm College seniors.
"The time that they play Time of your Life by Greenday, every senior there wins a free beer," Dello Russo said. "They're a band that likes to have a good time."
Best Not Broken performs three more New Hampshire shows through April and May before performing at the Boston Commons on June 6. The band is preparing to record some original songs, and is looking for a producer to work on their album, which Jackson expects to release at the end of this calendar year.
